Majestic Island Home

Crooked Island, majestic jewel in the sun,

Land of stunning beauty

You bless all with your year long balmy breezes.

From Gun Bluff, breathtaking peak of wonder

View clean, clear shimmering seas

Teeming with tahlie, snappers,mutton fish,

Groupers,hind, trigger and angel fish;

And notice the harbour sentinel - Bird Rock Lighthouse.

Watch the fish hawk swoop, drift, dive-

Snatch its prey and fly away

To enjoy a memorable meal.

At the culvert birds flirt and frisk

Camouflaged by the coppice.

Barracudas, sleek and slim, swim

With the rushing, swirling ocean current.

Seagulls hunt along the shore and crave crabs.

But these dumb delightful creatures

Enjoy having any crumb.

Bay geranium, handy medicine,

Crowd the shore

Intermingling with morning glory, sea oats and burrs.

Coconut palm trees, tall, sturdy sentinels,

Flail in the brisk breeze.

Crooked Island, majestic jewel,

In the southern Bahamas,

Shares the legacy of a quaint, remote heritage.

Mount Pisgah, lofty height stands

Daring curious climbers

To scale its summit and experience delight.

Achievement brings out the giant in all -

Youth and aged, short and tall.

French Wells, accessed from Turtle Sound,

beckons with clean, white, powdery sand

And miles of beach with scattered shells -

Sunrise and sunset butterflies

Basking in the noon day heat.

Bonefishing, stirring sport, flys and lures -

Game fishermen linger in the flats.

Nature rules the weather and the catch.

Mangrove swamps and undulating hills

Welcome all to taste its island fare -

Cassava, corn, crabs, savoury sapodilla and soursop,

Gigantic grapefruits, guavas

And jumbo, juicy lime green guineps.

Come one, come all; taste and see

The majestic island kingdom, haven and home.

Crooked Island - A Land Of Beauty

For the past three years, Crooked Island has been home for me.. One  Bahamian songwriter declares that Inagua is the best kept secret in the Bahamas. Wrong! That individual most likely has never toured Bird Rock Lighthouse, visited nearby caves or picnicked at French Wells. Turtle Sound, in Church Grove, provides the panoramic scoop photographers crave and consider delectable. Nature enthusiasts hunger to watch the fifty two species of birds that favour the culvert region, a curly tailed lizard,a blue lizard or a unique and nondescript one. A binocular camera or even a scope provide the enriching aid for a rewarding, captive experience.

Before I left New Providence, I wondered about the availability of fruits. No need to worry. The fruits  grow bigger and sweeter on Crooked Island! In fact, I have enjoyed the tantalizing, tasty harvest from the rocky backyard.  There we grow everything possible - tomatoes, sugar cane, peas, beans, broccoli, sweet pepper, goat pepper, lady finger [pepper], spinach, papaya, sweet potato, corn, parsley, dill seed, watermelon, cantaloupe, spinach, hog plum and thyme.  All we need now is our own  property planted with such food -  a scrumptious and abundant harvest! In addition,I have made my request for fruits known to those who question or wonder about my lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet. They fill in whatever I may be missing with fruits and vegetables! During dilly, soursop, guinep, sugar apple, soursop, grapefruit, orange, tangerine, custard[Jamaican] apple, guava and mango season , the fruits arrive in abundance. Limes and sour orange are available too.

The backyard has native trees. These trees include edible pigeon plum, dohling[darling plum [which grow wild], as well as sisal  plants and mahogany. We cleared out the poison wood. Some plants that have been potted include okra, soursop, hibiscus, celery, onion and carrots. In addition, there are local flowers. One easily recognized flower is the Bahamian daisy or shepherd needle. The others, which are seasonal, serve as subjects for photographs. A rock garden includes plants we brought  from New Providence and native ones. Throughout the lawn, there are inconspicuous wild flowers. Nature lovers notice them. The front yard has been landscaped by a true artist who included bromiliads, velvets and dracenas, as well as conch shells in his arrangement.

Crooked Island, a land surrounded by shimmering waters that sparkle like diamonds, is dotted with coconut palm trees. Finding words to aptly describe this paradise is a herculean task. Like a delicate meal which demands mincing bites, so is the majesty of this historic island. Of the seven hundred islands, rocks and cays  in the Bahamas  archipelago, Crooked Island is one that provides unforgettable, pleasant memories. After all, who can easily forget  such a jewel, a priceless gem?
